A Little History
For years people in Mission needing wheelchairs, crutches, shower stools, raised toilet seats or any aid because of accident or illness, could borrow these from the Canadian Red Cross. From 1986 this has operated from the lower first floor in the hospital and was a free service, though of course donations were always welcome. It made for a low cost alternative to buying or renting whatever was needed on a temporary basis.
In the summer of 2007, the Red Cross decided to close six of the smaller Medical Equipment Loan Depots in the Lower Mainland. Mission was to close on October 31, 2007. This meant that Mission residents who needed the low cost service would have to go to Abbotsford or Maple Ridge. The volunteers, many of whom had worked for years on this service with the Red Cross maintaining and loaning out the equipment, approached the Mission Health Care Auxiliary Society to see if they would consider continuing with this service under their name. This was a wonderful opportunity for another service, and so, the Mission Health Care Auxiliary Loan Cupboard was opened on November 1, 2007, with the Red Cross generously donating all of the equipment and office supplies to the Auxiliary. Since the change, many members of the public have donated equipment for which income tax receipts have been issued.
