Volunteer Bio – Ghyslaine Palmer

I was born in Lausanne, Switzerland. Graduated from high school and went on to get a diploma in Sales Management. Worked in a Swiss Bank while pursuing courses in esthetics.

Wanted to learn English so I left home in 1965 to work at the Grand Hotel in Eastbourne, England as a Chambermaid. Had the wonderful opportunity to meet Charlie Chaplin and his daughter Geraldine, as well as Princess Margaret and her then husband Tony.

Through the patience of co-workers and customers I gradually learned some English. TV helped, too! Finally ended up working for Lloyds Bank Europe in London shortly after getting married.

My stay in England lasted 5 years. Six months after the birth of my daughter Natalie, our immigration papers for Canada arrived. Boarded the Queen Elizabeth 2 for New York, then flew to Vancouver. Three years later, gave birth in North Vancouver to my son Nishaan.

Worked as Esthetician, Hostess, Sales Executive, and Make Up Artist for Chanel, as well as many extra activities related to the fashion world. Got tired of it!!! Ended up as an Administration Clerk for BC Trade and the Premier’s Office.

The children’s father passed away in 1980. Moved from North Vancouver to Richmond where I remarried in 1996. David and I moved to Mission in 2001 to be closer to my daughter and young family.

Worked as an Administration Clerk for a Fireworks Company in Abbotsford, then Bookkeeper for Cedar Ridge Golf Course in Mission. Was also a Welcome Wagon Representative during this time which I continued even after my employment ended. Volunteered with the Auxiliary in 2009, renting TV’s and alternating as the Convenor for ADC. I truly enjoy being part of a great group of Auxilians.

I am grateful to my husband for supporting me, and especially for being a great stepdad to Natalie, who is still battling cancer for close to 5 years now. A difficult trial to endure!!!
